Company History

Founded in Montréal, in June 1983, Pharmascience is one of two Canadian-owned generic pharmaceutical companies in Canada.  Pharmascience employs more than 1,300 skilled individuals, and provides the public with access to high-quality, cost-effective drug therapies.

Today, Pharmascience consists of four divisions located in Montreal, and manufactures nearly 300 products in over 1,000 formats to treat a wide range of illnesses.  « No market is too small » says David Goodman, Pharmascience Chief Executive Officer.  « If a patient needs it, it’s worth developing. »

Guided by this philosophy, Pharmascience now offers one of the largest portfolios of single-source prescription drugs.  In Canada alone, Pharmascience products fill more than 21 million prescriptions a year.  With an annual Research and Development (R&D) budget of $30 million in Canada, the company was among Canada’s top 100 corporate R&D spenders – including non-pharmaceutical companies – compiled by Research Infosource and published in the Nov. 7, 2008 issue of Canada’s Innovation Leaders.

With its constantly expanding portfolio, Pharmascience now records annual sales of more than $600 million in more than 60 countries.  As a made-in-Canada success story, it continues to focus on « Creating the Difference » in the healthcare industry.

Working in one of the finest Research and Development facilities in Canada, the Pharmascience R&D team is among the company's strongest assets.  This dedicated group is pursuing well over 100 projects at any given time, and boasts a strong track record of drug-product approvals in Canada, as well as internationally.

Between 2001 and 2005, Pharmascience initiated more than $150 million in expansion projects to meet growing global demand.  This allowed the company to intensify its R&D activities and accelerate the development of new pharmaceutical products.

Being a privately owned company in the pharmaceutical sector offers many competitive advantages for the company, its customers, and patients.  Managed for the long haul and with the goal of sustainable long-term profitability, a privately owned pharmaceutical company such as Pharmascience is more inclined to invest continuously in research. Not driven by its market capitalization, Pharmascience’s priority is to meet the needs and expectations of its pharmacy and healthcare provider customers, as well as patients the world over.

Pharmascience has not lost sight of its local responsibility to the community while expanding rapidly at the international level.  For a quarter of a century, Pharmascience has been helping create strong communities in which to work and live.  Through its various outreach programs, the Goodman Family Foundation, and with the active participation of many of its dedicated employees, Pharmascience has supported a number of charitable organizations across Canada and around the world over the years.
